London Sewerage System

In the early 19th Century the Thames was practically an open sewer, with disastrous consequences for public health in London. After the Great Stink the British Parliament, resolved to create a modern sewerage system. The engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette was given responsibility for the work. He created an extensive underground sewerage system which diverted waste to the Thames Estuary downstream of the main centre of population. The work involved the construction of new embankments along parts of the Thames in central London. These enabled new roads to be built to reduce traffic congestion and new public gardens were also created. In the 20th Century major improvements were made to the system, to reduce pollution of the Thames Estuary and the North Sea. The London sewer system plays a large part in English writer Neil Gaiman's 1996 novel Neverwhere.
