Lockport, Illinois

Lockport is a city located in Will County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,191. Lockport is located in northeastern Illinois, north of Joliet, at locks connecting Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal with the Des Plaines River. It also has locks of the old Illinois and Michigan Canals.

Geography

Lockport is located at 41°35'19" North, 88°2'50" West (41.588659, -88.047267). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.4 km² (7.1 mi²). 18.3 km² (7.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.14% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 15,191 people, 5,599 households, and 4,137 families residing in the city. The population density is 828.4/km² (2,144.3/mi²). There are 5,835 housing units at an average density of 318.2/km² (823.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.82% White, 1.11% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 4.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,599 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.17. In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 36.1% from 25 to 44, 18.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $59,179, and the median income for a family is $66,257. Males have a median income of $45,759 versus $30,551 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,939. 3.5% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
