Little River County, Arkansas

Little River County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 13,628. The county seat is Ashdown. The county was formed on March 5, 1867 and named for the Little River.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,463 km² (565 mi²). 1,377 km² (532 mi²) of it is land and 86 km² (33 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.87% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 13,628 people, 5,465 households, and 3,912 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (26/mi²). There are 6,435 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.52% White, 21.27% Black or African American, 1.45% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,465 households out of which 31.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.60% are married couples living together, 12.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 2.95. In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 25.60% from 45 to 64, and 15.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,417, and the median income for a family is $36,207. Males have a median income of $32,489 versus $18,435 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,899. 15.40% of the population and 11.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.80% of those under the age of 18 and 17.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
