List Of People Believed To Have Been Affected By Bipolar Disorder

Many famous people are believed to have been affected by bipolar disorder, based on evidence in their own writings and contemporaneous accounts by those who knew them. It is often suggested that genius and mental disorder are linked as discussed by Kay Redfield Jamison in Touched with Fire. The nature of the condition means it is nearly impossible to obtain a definitive list of bipolar persons, hence this is a list of those that are believed to be so. The fact that it contains many artistic geniuses can be interpreted in two ways, either that bipolar disorder occurs frequently in artistic geniuses or that people frequently associate mental disorder with genius in error, not understanding the nature of the gift. Below is a list of people who have been cited by a source as probably having bipolar disorder. It must be noted that many of the older cases are supposed from their behaviour rather than an actual medical diagnosis. To avoid controversy, this lists only deceased persons and living persons who have been frank about their condition.
