Lijiang City

Lijiang (麗江) is an old town in northwestern Yunnan Province, China. The town has a history going back more than 800 years, and is famous for its orderly system of waterways and bridges. It has been called the "Venice of the East". The old town of Lijiang differs from other ancient Chinese cities in architecture, history and the culture of its traditional residents the Nakhi. Lijiang was registered on UNESCO's World Heritage List on December 4, 1997. Since then, Lijiang's tourism boomed, and travellers from around the world flooded in. But because of the commercialization, the UNESCO is considering whether the town should be taken off the World Heritage List.
