Lezajsk

Leżajsk (in full The Free Royal Town of Leżajsk, Polish: Wolne Krlewskie Miasto Leżajsk) is a town in south-eastern Poland with 14,700 inhabitants (1998). Leżajsk is famed for its Benedictine monastery and the Leżajsk brewery. It has been situated in the Subcarpathian Voivodship since 1999. The town is crossed by a forest creek, Jagoda.

Historical Sites

Here are many fascinating antique premises decorating the town:
  • The Holy Trinity and All Saints' Parish Church;
  • Bernardine Order Monastery and Church Complex;
  • Former Greek Catholic Parish Church under the invocation of Holy Virgin's Rest; at present, the Succursal Roman Catholic Church
  • The Jewish Cemetary at Gorna Street, established in the 18th century. In the cemetary, there is a tomb of rabbi Elimelech Weissblum. The tomb is visited by Jews from all over the world each year.
  • The Town Hall, 1 Rynek Street;
  • The Arsenal, Furgalskiego Street, the 19th century;
  • The Municipal Public Library. The permises erected before 1914 as a social and culture club of the "Proswita" Ukrainian Associacion. The Library since 1956;
  • Former Palace, 4 Furgalskiego Street.

People

  • Prof. Janusz Dolny b. December 3, 1927, a Polish pianist and composer, was born in Kurylwka, a village in the province of Leżajsk.
He studied music at Konserwatorium Krakowskie im. Witolda Lutoslawskiego in Krakw and lives in Krakw.
  • Count Jan Potocki (1761-1815), capitan, engineer of the Crown Army, ethnologist, Egyptologist, linguist, and author.
