Lempira

Lempira is the currency of Honduras. Exchange rates were 2 Lempiras per 1 U.S. Dollar in the late 1980s (a twenty cent coin is called "daime" as it used to be worth the same as a U.S. 10 cent coin or "dime"). On December 2004, the exchange rate had gone up to 18.91/18.63 HNL to 1 USD. The Lempira is named after the cacique Lempira of the Lenca tribe, a native leader who fought the Spaniards. He is a national hero, and is honored in the 1 Lempira bill (which is red) and in the 50 cent coin. The capital of Gracias a Dios, Puerto Lempira, is named after him, as is the departamento (equivalent to province or state in other countries) Lempira.
