Lee's Summit, Missouri

Lee's Summit, also spelled Lees Summit, is a city located in Cass and Jackson County, Missouri. As of the 2004 Annual Development Report, the city had a total population of 82,528. It is the third largest city, geographically-based, in Missouri. Lee's Summit was the birthplace of jazz guitarist Pat Metheny.

Geography

Lee's Summit is located at 38°55'21" North, 94°22'27" West (38.922607, -94.374127). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 159.7 km² (61.7 mi²). 154.1 km² (59.5 mi²) of it is land and 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.50% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 70,700 people, 26,417 households, and 19,495 families residing in the city. The population density is 458.7/km² (1,188.0/mi²). There are 27,311 housing units at an average density of 177.2/km² (458.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.17% White, 3.47% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.99% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 1.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 26,417 households out of which 40.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.1% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.12. In the city the population is spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $60,905, and the median income for a family is $70,702. Males have a median income of $49,385 versus $32,837 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,891. 3.8% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.7% of those under the age of 18 and 4.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
