History

The town of Lebanon was chartered on July 4th 1776. The town was named for Lebanon, Connecticut. The early settlement of the region was all throughout the areas now occupied by Lebanon, West Lebanon, and Enfield, however the town gained its center in Lebanon because the drop in the Mascoma River at that location was most suited for milling. The town became an important manufacturing center and an important railroad hub when the railroad from Boston came through, making a local hub at West Lebanon, which became known as Westboro after two trains collided because of West Lebanon being mistaken for Lebanon. The town has suffered two major fires, of which the second, in 1964, destroyed a large portion of the old manufacturing district of town. This resulted in "The Mall" which was built to replace the portions of Hanover Street that were destroyed in the fire.
