Lawrence County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 15,569. Its county seat is Louisa ⁶. It is the home of country music star Ricky Scaggs.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,088 km² (420 mi²). 1,085 km² (419 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 15,569 people, 5,954 households, and 4,477 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (37/mi²). There are 7,040 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.93% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 0.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,954 households out of which 35.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.30% are married couples living together, 10.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.02. In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 12.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $21,610, and the median income for a family is $26,113. Males have a median income of $30,735 versus $19,174 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,008. 30.70% of the population and 25.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 40.00% of those under the age of 18 and 27.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
