English
poet
. He was born in
Spofforth
in
North Yorkshire
and studied at
Cambridge University
. He was ordained a cleric in the 1720s and served as rector of
Coningsby
in
Lincolnshire
. He was appointed
Poet Laureate
in 1718 after writing a poem commemorating the wedding of
Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle
, also
Lord Chamberlain
. Little-read today, he is one of several poets called "dull" in
Alexander Pope
's satire
The Dunciad
