Larimer County, Colorado

Larimer County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located along the Front Range, at the edge of the Colorado Eastern Plains along the border with Wyoming. As of 2000, the population is 251,494. The county seat and largest city is Fort Collins. The county was named for William Larimer, Jr., the founder of Denver.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,822 km² (2,634 mi²). 6,737 km² (2,601 mi²) of it is land and 84 km² (33 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.24% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 251,494 people, 97,164 households, and 63,156 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (97/mi²). There are 105,392 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 91.44% White, 0.66% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 3.41% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. 8.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 97,164 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.60% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.00% are non-families. 23.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.99. In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 14.20% from 18 to 24, 30.70% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 9.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $48,655, and the median income for a family is $58,866. Males have a median income of $40,829 versus $27,859 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,689. 9.20% of the population and 4.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.80% of those under the age of 18 and 4.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
