Larchmont, New YorkLarchmont is a village located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 6,485. As a village, it is located within the Town of Mamaroneck. It is located on the shore of the Long Island Sound. Before the advent of the automobile, Larchmont was a resort community serving wealthy New York City residents. A few of the grand hotels remain to this day, though they have been converted to other uses such as private residences. The world-renowned Larchmont Yacht Club still hosts an annual Race Week competition. It is adjacent to Manor Park, which was designed by well-known landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Famous residents have included: Lou Gehrig, New York Yankees baseball legend; Ang Lee, director of "The Hulk" and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon"; Marcus Camby, basketball player for the Denver Nuggets; Matt Dillon; Joan Rivers; playwright Edward Albee; director D.W. Griffith; novelist Jean Kerr and her husband, the Pulitzer Prize winning theater critic Walter Kerr. Geography Larchmont is located at 40°55'34" North, 73°45'11" West (40.926201, -73.753108). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 6,485 people, 2,418 households, and 1,709 families residing in the village. The population density is 2,340.1/km² (6,073.6/mi²). There are 2,470 housing units at an average density of 891.3/km² (2,313.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 94.23% White, 0.68% African American, 0.09% Native American, 2.82% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 4.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,418 households out of which 38.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% are married couples living together, 6.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.25. In the village the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 3.9% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.5 males. The median income for a household in the village is $123,238, and the median income for a family is $163,965. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $49,545 for females. The per capita income for the village is $73,675. 2.3% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line.
