Laponian Area
The
Laponian area
is a
UNESCO
World Heritage Site
in the province of
Laponia
in northern
Sweden
. It consists of the national parks
Muddus
,
Sarek
,
Padjelanta
and
Stora Sjfallet
, together with the nature reserves
Sjaunja
and
Stubba
and the areas of
Sulitelma
,
Tjuoltadalen
, and
Rapadalen
. The total area is about 9400 km². The area was named a World Heritage Site for both its natural and its cultural interest. It is one of the largest wilderness areas of Europe, and it is also part of
Sapmi
, the homeland of the
Sami people
.
