Lanny Mcdonald

Lanny McDonald (born February 16, 1953 in Hanna, Alberta, Canada), was a professional ice hockey player. After playing his junior hockey for the Medicine Hat Tigers, McDonald was selected fourth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1973 Amateur Draft. His professional career lasted from 1973 until 1989 during which time he played right wing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies, and Calgary Flames. McDonald served as captain for both the Flames and the Rockies. He lead the Flames to the Stanley Cup in 1989. Always known as a grinding forward, he scored a memorable over-time goal (with both a fractured wrist and broken nose) for the Maple Leafs during the 1978 playoffs that eliminated the New York Islanders from the quarterfinals. His trade to Colorado halfway through the next season is still remembered as one of the highly criticised trades made by team owner Harold Ballard that also saw Darryl Sittler and Rick Vaive leave the Leafs. Career Statistics: 500 goals scored, 506 assists over 1,111 regular season games played. His number 9 is the only sweater currently retired by the Flames organization. Lanny nows lives just outside of Calgary and has been active as General Manager and Director of Player Personnel for the Canadian entries in the World Cup and Olympic teams.
