Lamesa, TexasLamesa is a city located in Dawson County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,952. It is the county seat of Dawson County. Located south of Lubbock on t he Llano Estacado, Lamesa was founded in 1903. Most of the economy is based on cattle and cotton. Geography is located at 32°44'4" North, 101°57'29" West (32.734439, -101.958190). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²). 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 9,952 people, 3,696 households, and 2,679 families residing in the city. The population density is 803.9/km² (2,080.8/mi²). There are 4,270 housing units at an average density of 344.9/km² (892.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 73.65% White, 4.22% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 19.51% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 52.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,696 households out of which 34.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 25.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.20. In the city the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $27,362, and the median income for a family is $31,556. Males have a median income of $26,393 versus $16,826 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,211. 21.9% of the population and 18.1% of families are below the poverty line.
