Lakehurst, New Jersey

Lakehurst is a borough located in Ocean County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,522.

Geography

Lakehurst is located at 40°0'47" North, 74°19'13" West (40.013066, -74.320390). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.91% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,522 people, 870 households, and 662 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,058.4/km² (2,733.9/mi²). There are 961 housing units at an average density of 403.3/km² (1,041.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 84.22% White, 7.85% African American, 0.63% Native American, 2.34% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 2.74% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 7.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 870 households out of which 41.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 13.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 19.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.33. In the borough the population is spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 106.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.3 males. The median income for a household in the borough is $43,567, and the median income for a family is $48,833. Males have a median income of $35,403 versus $26,667 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $18,390. 7.1% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Lakehurst was the site of the Hindenburg disaster, when on May 6, 1937 the German Zeppelin Hindenberg caught fire at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station.
