Lake Grove, New York

Lake Grove is a village located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 10,250. The Village of Lake Grove is in the Town of Brookhaven. Lake Grove is well known as a popular commercial area in Northeastern Suffolk county, including a Loew's movie theatre, the Smithaven Mall, Sports Plus and other large chain stores.

Geography

Lake Grove is located at 40°51'23" North, 73°6'60" West (40.856319, -73.116565). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,250 people, 3,419 households, and 2,742 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,328.0/km² (3,436.8/mi²). There are 3,509 housing units at an average density of 454.6/km² (1,176.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 91.31% White, 1.44% African American, 0.09% Native American, 4.93% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.00% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 4.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,419 households out of which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.8% are non-families. 14.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.31. In the village the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 34.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.3 males. The median income for a household in the village is $67,174, and the median income for a family is $73,065. Males have a median income of $53,113 versus $33,253 for females. The per capita income for the village is $26,321. 5.1% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
