Lake Forest, Illinois

Lake Forest is a city located in Lake County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,059. The city is south of Waukegan, Illinois, on the shore of Lake Michigan. Lake Forest was laid out as a town in 1857.

Educational Instutions

Cheokee, Deerpath, and Everett are public K-4 schools. Deerpath Middle School is the public school for grades 5-8. Lake Forest High School is also located in Lake Forest. Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest Country Day, St. Marys are private schools in Lake Forest. Lake Forest College and Barat College (a college of DePaul University) are located here.

Geography

Lake Forest is located at 42°14'5" North, 87°51'3" West (42.234788, -87.851042). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 43.8 km² (16.9 mi²). 43.7 km² (16.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 20,059 people, 6,687 households, and 5,329 families residing in the city. The population density is 459.1/km² (1,189.4/mi²). There are 7,001 housing units at an average density of 160.2/km² (415.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.80% White, 1.35% African American, 0.06% Native American, 3.45% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,687 households out of which 39.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.6% are married couples living together, 4.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.3% are non-families. 18.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.17. In the city the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 19.7% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.5 males. The median income for a household in the city is $136,462, and the median income for a family is $165,512. Males have a median income of $121,234 versus $44,083 for females. The per capita income for the city is $77,092. 2.1% of the population and 1.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.3% of those under the age of 18 and 1.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
