Lake Carmel, New York

Lake Carmel is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in the Town of Kent in Putnam County, New York. As of the 2000 census, it had a total population of 8,663. The home of most of the Town of Kent's population, Lake Carmel is centered on the eponymous artificial lake, in the southeast corner of the township and just north of the Carmel. Lake Carmel was developed in the 1920s and thereafter by the Smadbeck brothers, who excavated and dammed a swamp and sold lots through the now-defunct New York Daily Mirror. Lake Carmel is the seat of a volunteer fire district covering the eastern half of the township, and of the Kent town government.

Geography

The community is west of Interstate 84. Lake Carmel is located at 41°27'37" North, 73°39'42" West (41.460268, -73.661663). According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²). 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.35% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 8,663 people, 3,019 households, and 2,351 families residing in the region. The population density is 648.2/km² (1,678.0/mi²). There are 3,167 housing units at an average density of 237.0/km² (613.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.96% White, 1.50% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.93% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 6.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,019 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.7% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.1% are non-families. 17.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.25. In the community the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 33.1% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.9 males. The median income for a household in the area is $70,678, and the median income for a family is $76,514. Males have a median income of $49,615 versus $37,292 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $27,253. 3.8% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
