La Salle County, Texas

La Salle County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 5,866. Its county seat is Cotulla6. La Salle County is named for Ren Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, the French explorer.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,870 km² (1,494 mi²). 3,856 km² (1,489 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,866 people, 1,819 households, and 1,351 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 2,436 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 81.47% White, 3.55% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 12.21% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 77.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,819 households out of which 37.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 15.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.89 and the average family size is 3.45. In the county, the population is spread out with 29.40% under the age of 18, 10.00% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 113.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 121.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $21,857, and the median income for a family is $25,494. Males have a median income of $20,856 versus $17,339 for females. The per capita income for the county is $9,692. 29.80% of the population and 28.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.50% of those under the age of 18 and 24.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
