La Quinta, CaliforniaLa Quinta is a resort city located in Riverside County, California, specifically in the Coachella Valley between Indian Wells and Indio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,694. It is growing at a rate of approximately 110% every ten years, making it one of the fastest growing cities in California. The Robb Report credits La Quinta as the nation's leading golf destination. Among those destinations is the La Quinta Resort and Club, a resort dating to the 1920's and famous as the spot in which director Frank Capra penned the screenplay of Lost Horizon. The city is home to a number of celebrity residents including Merv Griffin. Griffin is the driving force behind the annual La Quinta Arts Festival, one of the country's leading plein air art shows. Visitors to Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim can be treated to a brief glimpse of La Quinta in one of the park's most popular attractions. The "Palm Springs" segment of Soarin' Over California was actually shot at the world-famous PGA West golf complex in La Quinta. The Super Soap Weekend held each summer at Disney's California Adventure attracts many ABC soap stars, such as John Callahan and his wife Eva LaRue Callahan, who live in La Quinta. La Quinta has achieved notoriety in recent years as the site of the first Wal-Mart Supercenter in California. Geography La Quinta is located at 33°40'31" North, 116°17'51" West (33.675373, -116.297391). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 83.4 km² (32.2 mi²). 82.2 km² (31.8 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 23,694 people, 8,445 households, and 6,553 families residing in the city. The population density is 288.1/km² (746.2/mi²). There are 11,812 housing units at an average density of 143.6/km² (372.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.51% White, 1.42% African American, 0.72% Native American, 1.88% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 13.85% from other races, and 3.53% from two or more races. 32.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,445 households out of which 38.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% are non-families. 17.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.16. In the city the population is spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $54,552, and the median income for a family is $56,848. Males have a median income of $40,553 versus $31,627 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,284. 7.8% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line.
