L.l. Bean

L.L. Bean is a retail and catalog company based in Freeport, Maine, specializing in outdoor equipment and clothing. It was founded in 1911 by L. L. Bean, who had developed a waterproof boot he was selling to hunters. By 1912 he was selling this "Bean boot" through a 4-page mailer, and the boot remains a staple of the company's outdoorsy image. Although it maintains its Freeport store - which has been open continuously since 1951, with the exception of two Sundays when Maine changed its blue laws - L.L. Bean has stores as far as Tokyo, Japan, and a large presence on the Internet.
