Kurultai

Kurultai (Tatar: Qorıltay) is a political and military council of ancient Mongol chiefs and khans. All Great Khans of the Mongol Empire, for example Genghis Khan and Ogedei Khan, were formally elected in a Kurultai. (also spelled as kuriltai, qoriltay in English).
Various Turkic peoples use it as a synonym for council, assembly, convention, gathering. Usually the word is used in political or administrative sense, e.g., as a kind of Parliament or Congress, but not necessarily. Examples are "World Qorıltay of Bashkirs", "Fourth kurultay of Crimean Tatars", "National Kurultai of Kyrgyzstan".
