Japanese
general
. Born in
Satsuma
, now part of the
Kagoshima prefecture
, he distinguished himself in the
Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895)
. Later, he commanded the 1st Army in the
Russo-Japanese War
(
1904
-
1905
), in which he won the opening battle at the
Yalu river
. Afterwards, he advanced through the mountains and took part in the battles of
Liaoyang
,
Shaho
and
Mukden
with the other
Japanese
armies. He was made a
baron
for his services in the first war, and then a
count
