Kung Lao

Kung Lao is a character in the Mortal Kombat video game series. He is not to be confused with his ancestor, the Great Kung Lao

About Kung Lao

It's as if Kung Lao enjoys being in the shadow of others, finding a reclusive form of peace there. He stands in the shadow of his great ancestor, seeks counsel from master Bo' Rai Cho, and for a long time, was the comrade and sparring partner of Earth's champion, Liu Kang. Like him, he is a Shaolin monk and a descendant from the Great Kung Lao. Of the Earthrealm warriors, Kung Lao is the most outspoken pacifist, although he will not hesitate to defend himself if necessary. His trademark is his razor-rimmed hat, which he can employ in combat. Kung Lao is defined more by his mindful inwardness and quiet intelligence than his strength. Inside of him beats the heart of an unmistakably righteous and good man.

Storyline

Kung Lao was the only warrior monk at the Shaolin Temple of Light to surive the attack of the Tarkatan hordes from Outworld shortly after Liu Kang had defeated Shang Tsung in the first Mortal Kombat tournament. Although he joined his friend in his furious quest, his ultimate goal was to rebuild the White Lotus Society or Wu Shi Academy and train a new generation of warriors for the coming ages. When Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm came, he had to temporarily scrap these plans. There is some debate, though, over Kung Lao's immediate fate after the invasion, as every in-game piece of text in MK3, UMK3, and MKTrilogy relating to him states that he died in the final battle against Shao Kahn. Either way, after the attack was foiled, Kung Lao turned to a new, peaceful life that would not require him to take up his fighting skills again. He was only drawn out of his meditation and peacefulness when word reached him that Goro, the Shokan warrior who had defeated the Great Kung Lao centuries ago, was still alive, and chose to settle differences with him. The next years became years of peace. These brutally ended when the Deadly Alliance was formed and murdered Liu Kang in a vicious attack, with Shang Tsung dealing the final blow, after having posed as Kung Lao. Enraged, Kung Lao sought the advice of the martial arts teacher Bo' Rai Cho, and they both travelled to Outworld to face this new challenge. Kung Lao would not rest until Shang Tsung had been killed.
