Kumar GandharvaKumar Gandharva (real name Shivaputra Siddramayya Kamkali) was born April 8, 1924 in Dharwad (Karnataka, India). A great name in Hindustani classical music, he was famous for his unique style of singing, a stern refusal to be bound by tradition of any gharanas and his innovative genius. But more than that, he was a great musical intellectual. Arguably, he did not get the kind of popularity that his contemporaries like Pt. Bhimsen Joshi got. His health was also a big issue that shaped his career, as six prime years of his life were consumed by Tuberculosis, which at that time was a lethal disease. However, Kumar (a title that's given to child prodigies) Gandharva (the god of music in Hindu mythology) always enjoyed love, and support of dedicated and connoisseur enthusiasts. His singing was also true to the Indian Classical Music tradition of dialogue with the listners, of impromptu creation and interactivity. Kumarji also experimented with other forms of singing such as Bhajans (Devotional songs), folk songs etc. His nirgun (which literally means - without existential attributes) Bhajans are a great treasure for all spiritual people -- including atheists. Kumarji passed away with a great legacy of innovation, of questioning the traditional and yet not rejecting the tradition in a wholesole manner, of music that's connected to the roots of the Indian Culture and yet pathbreaking in its own right.
