Kujo Family

The Kujo family (九条家 Kujō-ke) is a former Japanese noble family and a branch of the Fujiwara clan derived from Fujiwara no Tadamichi. They were counted as one of Sekke, the five regent houses and therefore one of the noblest families among kuge. As one of Sekke, the five regent houses, the Kujo clan monopolized the offices of Sessho and Kampaku along with the Konoe, Takatsukasa, Nijo and Ichijo familys from the 12th century till 1867, besides Tokugawa Kazuko, the empress of the emperor Mizunoo, all empresses were derived from Sekke. Nijo and Ichijo families derived from the Kujo family. By the recommendation of Minamoto no Yoritomo, Fujiwara no Kanezane founded the clan. The fourth shogun Yoritsune and the fifth shogun Yoritsugu of the Kamakura shogunate came from this clan. After the Meiji restoration Kujo was titled duke.
