KovasThe word Kovas has several meanings: - (In mythology) Kovas is a name of a masculine deity in Lithuanian mythology. Basing on very stingy sources, some mythologists have reconstructed it as god of war, identical to the Prussian god Pikuls. According to reconstructions worshippers of Kovas would sacrifice him black horses and the sacral bird of Kovas is the rook or crow.
- Kovas corresponds to the month of March in Lithuanian. It got its name perhaps from the bird-name kovas, kovarnis 'a rook', the same way as balandis means both April month and a pigeon, and geguė means May month and a cuckoo in Lithuanian. In this case interpreting Kovas as a name of a deity may be false, based on analogy with Latin Mars god and month.
