Komodo National Park

The Komodo National Park is located in Indonesia, in the area of the Lesser Sunda Islands, in the border region between the provinces of Nusa Tenggara Timur and Nusa Tenggara Barat. The national park includes the three larger islands Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller ones. At land it encompasses an area of 603 km2, and 1817 km2 in total. The national park was founded in 1980, at first only in order to protect the Komodo Dragon. Later it was dedicated to the conservation of flora and fauna in general, including the maritime areas. The islands of the national park are of volcanic origin. Within its area there are living about 4000 inhabitants. In 1991 the national park was accepted as World Heritage by the UNESCO.
