Kiyoshi Shiga

Kiyoshi Shiga(志賀潔, February 7,1871 - January 25,1951) was a Japanese physician and bacteriologist. He is famous for the discovery of shigella in 1897. The bacterium shigella was named therefore after him. Dr. Shiga was born in Sendai, Japan. He graduated from the University of Tokyo(ex-Imperial) in 1896. After the discovery of Shigella, he worked with Paul Ehrlich in Germany (1901-05). After he returned Japan, he resisted the study of infectious diseases with Shibasaburo Kitasato.
