Kinney County, Texas

Kinney County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 3,379. Its county seat is Brackettville6. Kinney County is named for Henry Lawrence Kinney, an early settler.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,536 km² (1,365 mi²). 3,531 km² (1,363 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,379 people, 1,314 households, and 940 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,907 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.82% White, 1.69% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 18.61% from other races, and 3.43% from two or more races. 50.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,314 households out of which 27.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.80% are married couples living together, 6.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.10. In the county, the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 5.30% from 18 to 24, 21.50% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 24.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.00 males. The median income for a household in the county is $28,320, and the median income for a family is $32,045. Males have a median income of $26,422 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,350. 24.00% of the population and 19.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.00% of those under the age of 18 and 16.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
