Killiaen Van Rensselaer

Killiaen van Rensselaer (1580 - 1644) was a major investor in the Dutch West India Company, the founding organization of the historic Dutch colony in the Hudson River Valley in what is presently New York in the USA. In 1631, van Rensselaer puchased a tract of land near Fort Orange in New Amsterdam (now Albany, New York) and established an estate known as Rensselaerwyjck under the patroon system. He never personally came to visit his holdings, but created a steady stream of farmers, laborers, and craftsman to fill up his lands. Members of his family continued to expand and manage the original holding after his death. Rensselaer County, New York and the City of Rensselaer are named after van Rensselaer.
