Kawkawlin Township, Michigan

Kawkawlin Township is a township located in Bay County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 5,104. The unincorporated community of Kawkawlin is located in the township, a few mile northwest of Bay City on Michigan State Highway 13.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 107.5 km² (41.5 mi²). 84.6 km² (32.7 mi²) of it is land and 22.9 km² (8.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 21.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,104 people, 1,910 households, and 1,457 families residing in the township. The population density is 60.3/km² (156.2/mi²). There are 2,021 housing units at an average density of 23.9/km² (61.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 96.47% White, 0.47% African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 2.29% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,910 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.6% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.7% are non-families. 20.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.01. In the township the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.9 males. The median income for a household in the township is $43,951, and the median income for a family is $49,750. Males have a median income of $40,401 versus $22,941 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,648. 4.9% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
