Joyce BeattyJoyce Beatty of Columbus, Ohio, is a Democratic member of the Ohio House of Representatives. She served as a delegate for John Kerry on the Ohio delegation to the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston. Through her legislation, Beatty has strove to encourage personal finance literacy among young people and police automobile chase polices that protect public safety. Beatty is most proud of her leadership role in healthcare, addressing the issues of stroke and diabetes as well as designating June Mens Health Month. She has also organized a team of concerned women to fight for breast and cervical cancer funds for working women without insurance. She also spearheaded a request for state funding of the Kings Arts Complex and secured more than a quarter of a million dollars for capital improvements. In her private life, Rep. Beatty is a sought after motivational speaker and a businesswoman who serves as President of Joyce Beatty & Associates, Inc., a nationally recognized consulting firm that specializes in strategic planning and diversity training. She also founded African-American Businesswomen CEOs (ABC), an organization that offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to network and create strategic alliances. Rep. Beatty is a product of Ohios public schools and an advocate for public education. She holds a bachelors degree from Central State University, a masters degree from Wright State University and a doctorate from Pacific Western University. In 2003, she was honored with an honorary doctorate from Ohio Dominican University. Her community activities include the American Heart Association, the Columbus NAACP and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, where she holds a lifetime membership. She is also former chairman of the Columbus Urban League Board of Directors. Rep. Beatty is married to Attorney Otto Beatty, Jr., and is the stepmother to Attorney Otto Beatty III and Attorney Laurel Beatty.
