With an area of 1,08 km, Josefstadt is the smallest district in Vienna. It consists of the former villages of Josefstadt, Breitenfeld, Strozzigrund, and Alt-Lerchenfeld, as well as parts of St. Ulrich and Alservorstadt. The district borders are formed by Alser Strae in the north, Lerchenfelderstrae in the south, Hernalsergrtel and Lerchenfeldergrtel in the west, and Auerspergstrae and Landesgerichtsstrae in the east. Josefstadt developed to a neighborhood of the middle class. Most mayors of Vienna lived here. The President of Austria Heinz Fischer lives in Josefstadt in the Josefstdterstrae opposite the Theater in der Josefstadt. Due its proximity to the University of Vienna, Josefstadt is also the home of many students and supports a vibrant nightlife.
