Jones is named for Anson Jones, the fifth president of the Republic of Texas. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,427 km² (937 mi²). 2,411 km² (931 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.66% water. There are 7,236 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.80% White, 11.51% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 7.46% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 20.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,140 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 10.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 24.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.06. In the county, the population is spread out with 22.50% under the age of 18, 11.10% from 18 to 24, 31.50% from 25 to 44, 21.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 150.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 159.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,572, and the median income for a family is $35,391. Males have a median income of $26,892 versus $17,829 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,656. 16.80% of the population and 13.10% of families are below the poverty line.
