Johnson City, New York

Johnson City is a village located in Broome County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 15,535. The village is named after George Johnson, a shoe manufacturer. The Village of Johnson City was established in the Town of Union, New York and is a part of the "Triple Cities" along with Endicott, New York and Binghamton, New York.

Geography

Johnson City is located at 42°7'0" North, 75°57'34" West (42.116694, -75.959322). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.5 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.84% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 15,535 people, 6,981 households, and 3,651 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,350.9/km² (3,497.0/mi²). There are 7,650 housing units at an average density of 665.2/km² (1,722.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 88.86% White, 3.09% African American, 0.19% Native American, 4.93% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 2.03% from two or more races. 2.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,981 households out of which 22.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.1% are married couples living together, 12.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.7% are non-families. 40.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.88. In the village the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 85.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.0 males. The median income for a household in the village is $27,438, and the median income for a family is $39,241. Males have a median income of $31,980 versus $24,656 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,511. 16.0% of the population and 11.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
