John P. Buchanan
John Price Buchanan

) was
governor
of the
U.S. state
of
Tennessee
from
1891
to
1893
. He was a native of
Williamson County, Tennessee
. Official state records refer to him as the 28th Tennessee
governor
. A former two-term member of the
Tennessee House of Representatives
(
1887
-
1890
) representing his adopted home of
Rutherford County
, Buchanan's term in office was marked by
violence
in the
East Tennessee
coal
mines
, which was eventually put down by the State Guard. The
Confederate
pension
system was put in place during his tenure, as were state-supported secondary
public schools
. He returned to
farming
