John C. Major

Mr. Justice John C. Major, B. Com., LL.B. (Born in Mattawa, Ontario, 1931) is a Canadian jurist and associate justice on the Supreme Court of Canada.

Family

Son of William and Elsie Major. Married to Hlne Provencher, 1959. Children: Suzan, Peter, Paul and Steven.

Career

He was educated at Loyola College (now Concordia University), Montral and the University of Toronto. Hon. LL.D., Concordia University, 2003. He was called to the Alberta Bar Association in 1958 and practised law with Bennett, Jones and Verchere at Calgary and became senior partner in 1967. Appointed Q.C., 1972. Elected Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, 1980. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice, the Canadian Judges Conference and the Canadian Medical Protective Association (Alberta Counsel). As well as that he was a senior Counsel for the City of Calgary Police Service, 1975-85; Counsel at the McDonald Commission re RCMP, 1978-82; Counsel, Royal Commission into the collapse of the CCB and Northland Bank (Estey Commission); Senior Counsel for the Province of Alberta at the Code Inquiry into the collapse of the Principal Group of Companies, 1987. Appointed to the Alberta Court of Appeal, July 11, 1991.

Supreme Court

On November 13, 1992 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. Justice Major's term will expire in 2006, when he turns 75, however it is expected that he will depart the Court before that. Source:
