Jayendra Saraswathi

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal (born July 18, 1935 as Subramanyam Mahadeva Iyer) is the 69th Acharya (guru of the Kanchi Shankara Matham). He became the Shankaracharya of Kanchi and was given the title Jayendra Saraswathi on March 22, 1954. He was involved in talks related to the Ram Janam Bhoomi resolution case.He has played an acive role in social reforms and is a seer of great reverence to the people of India. On November 11, 2004, he was accused by the government of India's Tamil Nadu state of murdering a temple manager, and arrested. Also a large scale slander campaign was undertaken in the local press following the arrest. On January 10, 2005, the Supreme Court of India granted him bail by annoucing that there was no incriminating evidence. As the drama unfolds, it becomes clearer every day that the case was foisted on him. His imprisonment is now largely being seen as an attempt to denigrate him and the math .In the eyes of most hindus he holds a position equivalent to the Pope .
