Its county seat is Newton, Iowa6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,898 km² (733 mi²). 1,891 km² (730 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water. The North and South Skunk River flow through the county. Bodies of water include Lake Mariposa and Rock Creek. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 37,213 people, 14,689 households, and 10,267 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (51/mi²). There are 15,659 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.58% White, 0.83% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,689 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.30% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 26.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.92. In the county, the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 7.40% from 18 to 24, 28.60% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 101.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $41,683, and the median income for a family is $50,071. Males have a median income of $36,001 versus $24,770 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,622. 6.50% of the population and 4.80% of families are below the poverty line.
