Jackson Township, New Jersey

Jackson Township is a township located in Ocean County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 42,816. Jackson's most famous claim to fame is that it is home to Six Flags Great Adventure, which as of spring 2005 will have the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world named Kingda Ka.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 261.1 km² (100.8 mi²). 259.2 km² (100.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.74% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 42,816 people, 14,176 households, and 11,269 families residing in the township. The population density is 165.2/km² (427.9/mi²). There are 14,640 housing units at an average density of 56.5/km² (146.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 91.26% White, 3.90% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.06% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.97% from other races, and 1.67% from two or more races. 5.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 14,176 households out of which 44.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.5% are non-families. 16.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.99 and the average family size is 3.38. In the township the population is spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.1 males. The median income for a household in the township is $65,218, and the median income for a family is $71,045. Males have a median income of $51,276 versus $33,882 for females. The per capita income for the township is $23,981. 3.7% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
