Jackson County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 59,612. Its county seat is Murphysboro, Illinois6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,561 km² (603 mi²). 1,523 km² (588 mi²) of it is land and 37 km² (14 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.39% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 59,612 people, 24,215 households, and 12,664 families residing in the county. The population density is 39/km² (101/mi²). There are 26,844 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (46/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.79% White, 13.02% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 3.03% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.00% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. 2.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 24,215 households out of which 24.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.30% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.70% are non-families. 34.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.89. In the county the population is spread out with 19.30% under the age of 18, 26.00% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 17.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 104.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $24,946, and the median income for a family is $40,950. Males have a median income of $31,910 versus $22,396 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,755. 25.20% of the population and 14.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.00% of those under the age of 18 and 10.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
