Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al SabahJabir al-Ahmad al-Jabir Al Sabah (born June 29, 1926) is the emir of Kuwait, of the Al-Sabah dynasty in power there since the mid-18th century. He succeeded his cousin, Sabah al-Salim al-Sabah in December 1977, and had been Prime Minister of Kuwait for a decade before. In 1981, He dissolved the National Assembly of Kuwait, which sits at his pleasure in an advisory capacity. Under US pressures following the Gulf War, he restored it in 1991. Though in 1999 his government enfranchised women, Kuwaiti citizenship is so restricted that only 10% of the population is eligible to vote. Emir Jabir al-Ahmad was briefly deposed following the 1990 Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait in which an Iraqi governor, Ali Hassan al-Majid, was installed as a provisional Head of State. From August 2, 1990 to March 14, 1991 the Emir was exiled in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. He returned to the throne following the First Gulf War. See also Jabir al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah Jabir
