Ithaca (Town), New YorkIthaca is a town located in Tompkins County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 18,198. The Town of Ithaca is a doughnut-shaped portion of the metropolitan area of Ithaca, New York. It surrounds the City of Ithaca. Ithaca College is in the town, south of the City of Ithaca. Geography The town is at the foot of Cayuga Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 78.5 km² (30.3 mi²). 75.4 km² (29.1 mi²) of it is land and 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.99% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 18,198 people, 6,427 households, and 3,399 families residing in the town. The population density is 241.4/km² (625.1/mi²). There are 6,836 housing units at an average density of 90.7/km² (234.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 84.14% White, 2.93% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 9.18% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.38% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. 3.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 6,427 households out of which 24.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.6% are married couples living together, 5.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.1% are non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.83. In the town the population is spread out with 15.1% under the age of 18, 30.1% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males. The median income for a household in the town is $45,281, and the median income for a family is $68,346. Males have a median income of $49,592 versus $30,728 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,065. 13.2% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line.
