Italian Social Democratic Party

The Italian Social Democratic Party (P.S.D.I., Partito Socialista Democratico Italiano) was founded in 1952 by the union of two parties: the Unitarian Socialist Party and the Workers' Socialist Party. Both of them broke away from the Italian Socialist Party in 1947 and 1949, due to the communist tendencies of the latter. The longstanding leader of P.S.D.I. was Giuseppe Saragat, who acted as the president of the Italian Republic from 1964 to 1971. P.S.D.I. helped prevent a communist victory in the 1948 general election. It was the first Italian socialist party to be a member of the Socialist International. Wound up after the political earthquake of the 90s, it was refounded in 2003 for the advancing of European social democratic values in the Italian political arena.
