Cisalpine Republic
of north-central
Italy
in
1802
, following the change in its constitution that allowed French
First Consul
Napoleon Bonaparte
to become its president. Italian Republic consisted of the same areas the had made up the
Cisalpine Republic
– primarily
Lombardy
and the
Romagna
. In
1805
, following Bonaparte's assumption of the title of Emperor of the French, it was transformed into the
Kingdom of Italy
(
Regno d'Italia
), with Napoleon as King and his nephew
Eugne de Beauharnais
as
Viceroy
.
