Island Falls is a town located in Aroostook County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 793.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 104.8 km² (40.5 mi²). 92.9 km² (35.9 mi²) of it is land and 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 793 people, 346 households, and 229 families residing in the town. The population density is 8.5/km² (22.1/mi²). There are 635 housing units at an average density of 6.8/km² (17.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.12% White, 0.00% African American, 0.76% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 346 households out of which 26.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.81. In the town the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $27,083, and the median income for a family is $35,375. Males have a median income of $32,019 versus $19,028 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,132. 14.2% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.1% of those under the age of 18 and 11.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
