Its county seat is Mertzon6, and the county is named for Robert Anderson Irion, a secretary of state in the Republic of Texas. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,724 km² (1,052 mi²). 2,723 km² (1,051 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water.
